Lalibela
Carved directly into solid rock nearly a thousand years ago, Lalibela is one of the most remarkable sacred sites in the world. Its eleven rock-hewn churches, built during the reign of King Lalibela, were designed as a symbolic “New Jerusalem.” According to legend, angels worked by night to help complete the monumental task. Among them, Bet Giyorgis (St. George’s Church) stands as the masterpiece—its cross-shaped design perfectly chiseled from a single piece of stone.
