Bahir Dar, meaning “by the sea” in Amharic, is a tranquil lakeside city set along the shores of Lake Tana, Ethiopia’s largest lake and the source of the Blue Nile River. Locals still navigate its shimmering waters in traditional tankwa papyrus boats, much like their ancestors did thousands of years ago. Hidden around the lake’s islands are centuries-old monasteries, rich with colorful murals, ancient manuscripts, and the relics of Ethiopian emperors. A short distance away, the Blue Nile Falls—known locally as Tis Issat, or “The Smoking Water”—thunder into the gorge below, creating a misty rainbow spectacle and lush habitats for birds and wildlife.
