The ancient city of Axum is one of the great archaeological wonders of Africa. Once the capital of the Axumite Empire (1st century BC – 7th century AD), it was among the most powerful and technologically advanced civilizations of its time. Legend says that Queen of Sheba (Makeda) once ruled here, and her meeting with King Solomon in Jerusalem gave birth to the Solomonic dynasty of Ethiopia. Axum is also believed to house the Ark of the Covenant, kept in a sacred chapel at St. Mary of Zion Church, guarded by a single monk. The city’s iconic granite stelae, soaring into the sky, are enduring symbols of Axum’s past greatness and Ethiopia’s eternal heritage.
